There was a lot of interest in me doing a Questions and Answers style post. So, as always, you ask, I deliver! I'll break them down into Teaching related questions and Health/Fitness related ones. I've combined some questions as there were some similar ones. Hope you enjoy another look inside my life :)
I know the minute people hear the word panel, there are a couple of reactions - one can be so excited and delighted to hear that it's finally their turn to get permanent (hopefully!) Others turn white with panic and fear, and the vast majority of people are met with utter confusion. So I'm here to help with some questions people may have, and to try reduce the panic and the fear surrounding the panel. As always, I am commenting on the panel from personal experience, and from research. I was involved with both panels (Main and Supplementary) in the past two years, so I feel like I'm in a good position to advise. I will explain towards the end of this post about my personal experiences, but I first want to go through some of the application process. It's that time of the year, folks! Most people absolutely dread them, so I'm going to give you some tips and pointers on how to make them less daunting. Don't get me wrong - I don't enjoy them either, but being prepared and organised will definitely help matters.
With Maths Week approaching, I thought I'd share some fun Maths activities I've found online and used myself in the past. Can't wait to use some of them this year with my kids. We do Maths Recovery in our school (It's DEIS Band 1) so there will be lots of the Maths Recovery activities being done throughout the school during the week. We also invite the parents into the classroom to observe Maths lessons, play Maths games and learn how to help their children with Maths at home. This is done in conjunction with the Maths Recovery teacher, the class teachers and the Home-School Liaison teacher.
Is your school participating in Maths Week? Have a look on the website: http://www.mathsweek.ie/2015 for more information and some suggested activities. Here's some of the things I'll be using with my current class, some I've used previously, and other ideas I've found along the way :) Anybody who is a teacher will know - September is a killer! Between a new class, new classroom, new books, new kids, new school and staff in some cases, it can be so overwhelming. And this year, it really hit me. The tiredness, the emotion, the sheer feeling of crap-ness. I posted already about my first week with my class, here, but I thought I'd do a new post about surviving the month of September. I also want to post about how I try to maintain a work-life balance. I've recently gotten a couple of mails asking me how to combine a healthy lifestyle with a good social life, and the pressures of our job too. So, here we go!
